Behavioural scientists have spent time trying to decipher what brings happiness (and doesn’t). Ironically, happiness determines aspects such as longevity, social progress, and the impact of public policies. Happiness just doesn’t happen; you’ve got to work actively towards it.
So, what are some things that you can do to increase your happiness in life? Here are a few suggestions to be happier in life
1) Embrace a positive mindset
Positivity is contagious, so make an effort to surround yourself with positive people and things. When you’re feeling down, look for the silver lining in every situation and focus on the good in your life. A positive outlook will help you attract more happiness into your life.
2) Understand the dynamics of life
Life is full of ups and downs, so it’s important to accept that happiness is not a constant state. Instead, it’s and the impact of public policies. Happiness just doesn’t happen; you’ve got to work actively towards it.
So what does happiness entail? According to positivist psychology, happiness is defined as “subjective well-being.” In other words, happiness is relative and unique to each individual. What makes one person happy may not make another person happy. Nevertheless, there are certain happiness “ingredients” that are universal. These happiness ingredients can be found in what is called the “happiness formula.”
The happiness formula is: H = S + C + V.
H stands for happiness, S stands for set-points (or genetic predisposition), C stands for conditions of living, and V stands for voluntary actions. In order to increase happiness, one must either change their set-point (which is difficult to do), change their circumstances, or change their behavior.
Changing your set-point is difficult because it is largely determined by genetics. However, it is possible to change your circumstances and behavior in order to increase happiness.

Acknowledging the existence of these issues allows one to freely express underlying emotions, be mindful of the circumstances and fight inner conflicts.
The things that you thought were negative experiences can actually be viewed as positive ones when you see how they have made you who you are today. Your rewritten story will help you to focus on the present and future, rather than dwelling on the past. This will give you a greater sense of control over your happiness and overall well-being.
Socratic questioning
A personal favorite method of inquiry used to explore different perspectives and stimulate critical thinking. When you ask yourself questions, it allows you to reflect on your happiness and figure out what steps you need to take in order to improve your current situation.
Below are some examples of happiness-related questions that you can ask yourself:
1) What are the things that make me happy?
2) What can I do to increase my happiness levels?
3) What is happiness for me?
4) How can I change my perspective and view happiness from a different lens?
5) How has happiness looked different throughout my life?
Asking these types of questions will help you develop a greater understanding of happiness and how it relates to your situation.
For instance, rather than focusing on finding love, Socratic questioning urges you to become a neutral observer. In this case, frequenting social places and other potential meeting areas, and allowing the rest flow.
Find your happy place
